These are amazing to study from since he breaks down the forms pretty well and I guarantee after doing a few studies of their feet or hands you pick up really quick on how to break them down yourself to suit your needs. When all I owe is cleared away definitely want to do a long series of studies of his after I acquire some paintbrushes and ink from here.

Yesterday, I *slept in* until 4:30am, got my babies up and fed, planned an Easter brunch menu, finished a batch of rewrites, worked all day writing more comics than you, managed to sneak in 30 minutes on the treadmill and a quick shower before grabbing my hilarious and brilliant husband, two amazing children and double-batch potluck dish and heading to a seder at the home of two of our best friends, where I *rocked* playing with my daughter and her new bow & arrow out on the porch.

Kate Bishop is great. I love Kate. But she’s a fiction, sweetheart, and she’s no fucking me.

I think one of the hardest things to learn when you’re starting out on a making-stuff journey is which bits of that voice are valid and which bits are a waste of time. A lot of it can drag you down and get you stuck so much that you can’t find the confidence to face the stuff you need to do to get better. But once in a while there’s a real piece of honest self-reflection. Telling the difference between those two can be super tough; knowing when to listen and when to just chin up and move on.

Deep-Dish Chocolate Chip Cookie for One

Ingredients (1 serving):

1 Tbsp unsalted butter, at room temperature

1/2 Tbsp unrefined granulated sugar, such as evaporated cane juice

1/2 Tbsp packed light brown sugar

1 Tbsp beaten egg, preferably organic (cover & chill remaining beaten egg for tomorrow’s cookie cup… you will be making another one!)

tiny splash pure vanilla extract

2 1/2 Tbsp whole wheat pastry flour (can substitute with 3:1 of cake flour and all purpose flour)

1/8 tsp baking soda

tiny pinch salt

heaping 1 Tbsp grain-sweetened chocolate chips, such as Sunspire

Instructions

In a small ramekin or microwavable cup, combine softened butter and both sugars; stir well with a spoon. Stir in beaten egg and vanilla extract. Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt just until combined. Stir in chocolate chips.

Microwave on high for 35-40 seconds. Let cookie rest at room temperature for about 10 seconds before devouring.

Nutritional Information:

253.2 calories, 13.8 grams fat, 8.4 grams saturated fat, 2.9 grams fiber, 17.5 grams sugars, 2.4 grams protein

What are you paying for? If it’s for an item that is physically being shipped to you, then by all means continue!
But if it is for digital art, please reconsider!

This means that paypal is expecting me to ship a physical item to you!
And the more times that I receive money for goods, and do not ship through them, the more it counts against me.
Too many and paypal can elect to hold my funds for thirty days every time I receive them, until it reevaluates my account.

the latest in the lois-gets-her-art-stolen chronicles: a chilean publisher has decided to take this artwork, drag it through photoshop hell, and use it as a cover for this book, obviously without permission or compensation of any kind. not only is it copyright infringement but making book covers this ugly should be outlawed too.

anyways, i went through this before when i found my art printed on sweaters in south korea. i talked to a few different lawyers at the time, who told me that i needed a lawyer in the actual country that the theft was taking place.

The thief is Puerto de Escape in Chile (a publisher) and i intend to go after them. however, i need someone who is familiar with chilean law and ideally could hook me up with a lawyer in chile to help me out and give advice. i could also use advice from anyone familiar with these situations and how they can be resolved. if you guys could spread the word and e-mail me at loishh@gmail.com with any information, that would help me SO much! thanks a ton for reading!!

So it’s 2013.

20-Freaking-13!

….so how about some — not resolutions… some GUIDELINES as to what I want to get accomplished this year. If I get any of them done, AWESOME! Here we go:

~Spend less time being attached by the hip to technology

I have a bit of a problem. I’ll spend a whole afternoon checking facebook, and then when I decide I’ve had enough and close down my laptop, I immediately open my phone and check facebook! This is not okay. Now, I have to be realistic with this - my work is completely entangled in technology. But I think I’m going to set one day a week that is an internet-free day (only exceptions - student related things). I’m thinking Saturdays…. which means tomorrow…. *gulp*

~Drink more water and tea

I’m not resolving to give up Diet Coke. But, I’m resolving to drink less of it by drinking more water and more tea.

~Draw more personal art and post these drawings online!

Lets face it. I’ve been pretty MIA online. I’ve pretty much lost my online presence. I want to get that back.

~Eat Better

This doesn’t just mean less junk food. I want to cook more, eat out less, bring lunches, etc. I also want to try cooking something I’ve never cooked before once a month. I think this month, I will FINALLY make a fruit tart! :) Fruit is healthy!

~Allow myself to make mistakes, and forgive myself more.

I am very hard on myself. I want to try and grow as a person, take more risks, do things I’m scared to do. Related to this, I want to try and get one commission, or sell one work of art. To someone that isn’t related to me. Yup.

~Begin work on a senior film I can be proud of.

This year I will begin work on my SCAD senior film. I want to do a good job of it. I’m terrified. I am BLOODY terrified…. I hope I can make something I can look back on and be proud of.

~Get some kind of part-time job.

One that I can do during senior film, but that I can also fully enjoy.

~Get my professional stuff set up

Career fair is in the spring, and I want to have a resume, demo reel, portfolio site, business card, and leave behind all put together for it.

~…finish that fanfic….

Not the sequel, unfortunately. I want to finish Be Gentle With Me. It’s stupid that I haven’t finished it yet. This year, I will.

So yup. Those are my not-resolutions-but-things-I-want-to-work-on-this-year.

Okay so I know this is kinda taboo but anyways.

Frida Kahlo: Not too easy on the eyes. I mean she’s got the lady-mo and the monobrow thing going on. She didn’t know where to put her blush or what shade lipstick would obviously suit her skin tone. Really, she’s a bit of a wreck. So this got me to thinking. What would have happened if her girlfriends had done the right thing and taken her to a beautician, (which clearly needed to happen)? I did a subtle re-paint over the top of her original self-portrait to “conceptualize” what it would have looked like if she had been whisked off to Beauty Works or the likes….I didn’t want to alter the integrity of the original painting too much. What do you reckon?

I hate whining about my personal opinions on the blog I want to keep professional and “art-only.” I hate potentially starting a huge argument or having to waste time defending myself. The thing I hate most is this shit.

Frida Kahlo looked in the mirror and painted herself as she truly was. All her lumps, all her bumps and everything people thought made her look hideous because that is who she was. No amount of makeup, preening or any sort of bullshit involving her friends taking her to a salon could change who she is; she should whole heartedly be accepted for who she is/was. She wanted to challenge what we thought was beautiful because who was to tell her that her unibrow wasn’t? Or that naturally growing facial hair wasn’t? She was born with it just like she was born with two eyes, lips and a nose.

This is exactly what makes me draw the way I do. Ugly people, fat people, cellulite, bad haircuts, small tits, small dicks, whatever. I’ll draw it because the majority of people think this is acceptable, that this is desirable and that people should only be X, Y or Z and nothing else. This is what a living human being looks like, lumps and all, and that is what I want to draw - not something intended to be jacked off to.

Part of what makes Frida Kahlo’s work so fascinating is that she never represents herself in her art as an ideal, totally desirable beauty. She wasn’t painting to reassure you that she looked good, she was painting to make a statement.

The cleaned-up version of this lacks all of the charm and powerful charisma of the original peace because it doesn’t offer any statement whatsoever; It is not personal, it is a streamlined design meant to please. While this in itself is not wrong, it is not representative of Frida Kahlo at all. What it represents is the notion that women need to be “cleaned up.”

I’m sorry, but by altering the main subject of the piece and giving her an impersonal makeover, you have not only altered the integrity of the piece, but removed it entirely.

So….I’ll try to sum up what’s happening here. In 2008, I designed and modeled a robot girl for a college assignment. I posted them on DeviantArt as I always do, and since then I’ve gotten quite a few people asking if they can model it as well. I always tell them sure, as long as I’m credited with the design. I failed to put my name/info on the image though, so it has been spread around the internet and some people have modeled it without my permission (just for the record you don’t have to sign something for it to be protected by copyright). They usually find out who made it later and gladly credit me. So I don’t mind!

Until someone tries to sell it.

Fast forward from 2008 to now. I find out that someone has been selling a model of my design on Turbosquid since March of this year, and it has made thousands of dollars in profit. I’m naturally very upset about this, so I report the infringement to Turbosquid. At first they seemed fairly courteous, but then I wake up today and find them basically asking me to let him keep selling the model as long as he credits me. Are you kidding? After making thousands of dollars? Note that Turbosquid takes a 60% commission of profits by default, so they likely made even more money than the seller did from my design.

They tried to appeal to pity by talking about how hard he worked on creating the model from my design. HI! I DID THAT TOO!

I just can’t believe Turbosquid is taking the side of the infringer and trying to ignore the fact that they both made thousands of dollars off my IP without my permission. The minimum amount of money made is $2,481.00. I base that on how many reviews the model had, which you can only do if you buy it. However, this doesn’t include any purchases made that weren’t given reviews.

I think it goes without saying that the profits belong to me. It is not right for a guy in another country to steal my design and make thousands from it while I struggle to make ends meet. I have never made a penny off of that character design. To think that Turbosquid considers it fair for me to make nothing off my design while they made thousands is just unbelievable.

PLEASE reblog this. I am an amateur artist. I am not famous. I spent $130,000 to go to art college and haven’t found a full-time job since. My only job is the freelance I do from home. I am not Disney. I can’t afford to have my designs stolen for profit. I am hopeful that with enough exposure of this, Turbosquid will suddenly find the ethics they dropped on the floor somewhere. If this can happen to me, it can happen to you.

Wow… Can you say “Dick move, TurboSquid?” Take precautions! Be open about sharing your ideas and promoting yourself, but make sure they can’t be stolen from you!
